disconnecting the battery cable for awhile will/should turn out the light (if you fixed the problem right). Its a cheap quick way of shuting off the mil light. However the code will still be in the memory. The proper way is to get a obd scanner/ reader and remove it with that tool.

In order to reset the check engine light on a Toyota Tacoma you will need to use an ODB-II scan tool. Essentially it is a cable that works either with a handheld device or laptop that plugs into the diagnostic port of your vehicle. In Tacoma's the diagnostic port is located under the dash above the gas pedal.

If you had your repairs done at a garage, they should have reset the light by erasing the codes your trucks computer generated before the repair. If this was the case, go back to them and get it reset - it should be an absolute no-brainer for them.

If you did the repairs yourself, you have a few options. The cheapest is to go to a local Autoparts store - preferably one of the bigger chains. Most of them will scan and clear the codes on your truck for free.

Another option if you regularly do repairs yourself is to purchase your own scanner. I personally use the a product called ScanGauge which does the code scanning/erasing plus a number of other things. You can check them out at http://www.scangauge.com. (no affiliation to the company - I just like their product)

On some cars you can reset the codes by disconnecting the battery. From my experience, this does not work with Tacomas as the ECU (engine control unit) has a flash memory that does not rely on battery power.

After the repairs are complete, set the scanner to the year made and model of the vehicle, plug it into the port, and turn it on. In the menu choose "Reset" and press program to accept the command. The light should go out. Remove the scanner and test drive the vehicle to make sure there are no other problems which would set the check engine light back on.

I have a Crown Vic and my lite comes on and my mechanic says to unplug your battery cables for about 10 to 15 minutes and it will go off .The first time I did this it lasted for 631 miles but always remember if you are going for an inspection drive the car for 35 to 50 BEFORE you get to the inspection place try it.It works on a Ford so why not a Toyota. The reason you have to drive those 35 to 50 miles is it gives the computer time to erase what you done so nobody will know you did it.I hope this makes sense and it helps you .

Usually, hold down the reset button on the Odometer compartment while you turn the car key to off position and wait for 2-3 second to turn it back in ON position, make sure you still hold down that reset button while doing that.
Good luck.

That light pertains to emissions control. Normally it is re-set during routine check-ups or stops when the problem is isolated and fixed......... causes include innocent things such as a gas tank screw cap not seating properly... should 'click' and seal....
