I went to a birthday party for a one-year-old. The invitation said 'No gifts, please.' So, I went without a gift and I was the only one without one.

Do you think I should buy something and take it to her, or just let it go?

This is one of those awkward social situations, but I think you should just let this go now and not worry about it. What is done is done. You actually did the right thing, which is what the invitation asked.

Having said that in future, regardless of the 'no gifts please' just go ahead and bring a little something, if it is for a child, for your own peace of mind. Which is what I expect everyone else did.

I am with those who say that getting a present, taking it and asking why so many people ignored the request for no gifts.
Maybe the people really did not want gifts and appreciated that you did not take one.
Once I was envited to a large party for a four year old, two hours before it started. So I went, nothing in hand, and two days later took three small gifts.
The gran was so smiling and appreciative. There is always a way to save the day!

This has actually happened to me before . My daughter was invited to a 5th birthday party . On the invitation it stated no gifts wanted the (best gift is your child being able to celebrate my child's birthday with her). Of course I thought aw how sweet ! . My daughter made the birthday girl a lovely card . When at the party everyone had put money in their cards and of course the birthday girl opened them one by one .Our card was the only one handmade and had no money in . I was so embarrassed. Learnt a lesson always pop a at least £5 in a card even when gifts not wanted will save on blushing .

My son is 7 and was recently invited to a party that also specified "no gifts" - I didn't want him to feel awkward without a gift, so we picked up a balloon arrangement (cheap but thoughtful). Sure enough when I picked him up, they were opening gifts. You have nothing to feel bad about - let it slide.

I would say mention it to the kid's mom if it bothers you too much, saying how you felt weird about it. Or actually you could just forget about it. You followed the directions on the invitation, so you did nothing wrong.

Just buy one and take it along, and ask "why no gifts, cos I felt like an idiot"
