That parent being god. It's almost like those who believe want someone to forgive us of our errors, not really being able to do anything without the help of a god. Almost like we can't think for ourselves.

"The more likely we are to assume that the solution comes from the outside, the less likely we are to solve our problems ourselves." Carl Sagan

I think sometimes, it's because when we do something wrong...we need to know that we can be forgiven, and that we are worthy of unconditional love. If we thought we could do something so awful that no one would EVER again think we were worthy of love...we'd all just jump off a cliff, but it's not all about forgiveness and punishment.

We need to know that someone understands us when no one on earth seems to.

We need to know that no matter how bad things get here...when we leave this earth, there is something more.

I don't think that God has to be perceived as someone or something outside. I think many actually believe that gods or God exists inside of us, lives in our soul and in our inspiration.

I think sometimes when our life seems to be getting the best of us we want help and guidance and if we learn, we can take on more and more responsibility. But our understanding of responsibility and what is correct, what the problems are all grows out of our deepest values and beliefs.

We all have something that our values and beliefs are centered around, and from that center we find meaning and take responsibility for our lives

It's not that we seek the solution from the outside, it's the absolution. Having faith and a belief in God does not mean we cannot think for ourselves, rather, it gives us hope that we an make ammends and try again. Forgiveness is something you cannot ask for if you arent willing to give it.

Your question is phrased in a way that makes it tough to answer. However, I'll say that the thing is that God wants us to overcome our errors. If God created us, and He is so very good, I cannot see Him _not_ helping us. God wants us to be the best we can. In my belief, the "solutions" come from both outside *and* inside.

Of course that doesn't quite answer your question of why we crave Him. To me, that is because He exists and wants us to know and to love Him, and so He built that into our minds, hearts, and souls.

So what's so great about thinking for yourself? Seriously, I spent 20 years of my life "thinking for myself" without listening to God's guidance. I made a mess of it. It was only after I started trusting God to guide me that I got my life on the right track. Oh, and my mother would definitely approve of that. She would never want to take credit for what God did.

Uh uh. Classic atheist mistake #14: assuming that all those who believe in a deity view that deity the way Christians view their god. Incorrect. Many people do not see god the way you describe.

wrong again ... christianity teaches that Gods work in the earth is performed through us ... and having a "higher power" over us gives us emotional stability and inspiration to solve problems ...
