why and how do people get accents?

wait, so if i lived in Australia i may pick up that accent or what?

Usually it has to do with where you live; as to why, who knows. One exception to this was that Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow adopted British accents to make themselves sound more sophisticated and worldly.

there is a philological theory that says that you can get a different accent or learn a different language and sound native until you are 12 or so years of age...beyond that age whatever language you learn you would speak it with an accent or in case you move to a different area in your country where people speak the same language as you but with a different accent you wont get the accent is you are older than 12

The sounds that are used by different languages vary. For example, the Hawaiian language has only about 15 sounds, compared to English's 26 letters (and other sounds like th, ch, sh, long vowels, short vowels, etc.) So depending on your native language, you may not learn as a child to make certain sounds. Should you then try to learn a language that has those sounds, you will probably not make them correctly and have an accent.

they visit that place for say like a year. they are surrouned by people with a certain accent and they start to pick it up because it sounds natural.

its called learned behaviors , they teach about it in 6th grade
