i think the best names for cats are people names but the bet way to pick a name is to have the kitten for a few days and see its personality and then pick a name to fit. look up name meanings online and name your kitten for some of its characteristics.
babynames.com is a great site for looking up name meanings.

I adopted a cat on the way home from my mother's funeral.......to get my mind off of it I guess, and named her "Mandy" after my mom (who was "Amanda").
By weird/unique/different, do you want a human person name like my kitty, or something that means something in another language (like if you have a black cat you can use the word "black" in Swahili or French or whatever), or what are you really thinking of?
I always thought it was cute when people named their cats after cars.......Porsche, or Targa, or Mercedes, or what have you.
I think if I were to get a new little girl kitty at this point, I'd name her Ferrari. But that's just my state of mind, it really depends on what you are looking for. Hope this was of some help to at least get your mind going.

Read T. S. Eliot's Book of Practical Cats. Those poems provide plenty of singular cat names. A few names, like Grizabella and Etcetera, were added for the musical.
For a solid black cat, Darth Vader would work - or Darthette for a female.
Movies, songs, poems, science fiction are all good sources for distinctive cat names.

my son picked our cat's name - he just put letters together and it worked. His name is Zeeko. It's a perfect name for this cat. My suggestion, get a hold of Scrabble letters and just put some out on the table at random till you have something that is pronounceable. It will definately be unique! :)
