Actually, when I see answers like most of the above, I don't wonder. Even if they know and understand the information, not enough people care.
I use rechargeables, but am also investing in devices which use alternative, renewable power sources. Solar lights, windup flashlights, that type of thing, to eliminate as many household items as possible requiring battery power. Alternatives are becoming more readily available, and the prices are reasonable.
Thanks for trying to educate people; don't get discouraged, and don't stop.

It doesn't go into the soil, in any case. Our landfills are separated from the earth itself: nothing soaks into the soil from these. The contamination from these is nothing, however, compared to what there'd be if everyone had an electric car, or a fuel-cell vehicle.

actually, very few people are actually wondering "why" water is contaminated and the oceans are dying, it's not like a big secret. the real question is what to do about it

What is your source for the 300 million tons- you state the EPA yet their website has no facts to back up your claim.
