The fear of damnation and the promise of salvation are basically the only tools they have in order to subjugate the masses. Without a following, the Catholic (and all other) church is powerless.
The Bible says that all sin is forgiven of the true believer. If being gay is a "sin", then that too would be forgiven by God, not the Pope.

No, catholics are not for gays, Episcopalians are. Different denomination. Even most anglicans dont agree with the gay issue.
