There are several file formats that can be used to store music in a more compact form than that which is used on a CD that can be played on a regular player. The most popular of these formats is MP3 which is often used to transfer music over the Internet. Another format MPEG4 is created when you copy music from a playable CD using iTunes. The files have the format .m4a A standard album of pop tunes converted to .m4a files takes up about 35 megabytes. You could fit about 20 of these albums onto a 700 mb CD-R. You can import songs in several formats and from CDs directly into iTunes. You can use iTunes to burn a playable CD which wouldn't hold very many or you can go to the file that holds those iTunes files and drag them directly to a blank CDs icon or window and burn the CD. This CD will not play in a standard player (although there are players on the market that will play tunes in these formats right from the disk). You could use this disk to import the tunes into iTunes on someone else's computer and you could then use iTunes to load an iPod. If these tunes were downloaded from a pay service like Apple's iTunes Store then you may have copy protection problems in moving from one computer to another. If your main goal is to load an iPod you don't need to make a CD-R first.

You can download itunes software to change the songs over to the ipod, if you don't have a ipod that is an apple you can make an mp3 song out of your songs and you can put much more than 100 songs on a cd, a Cd 600 megs will hold about 250 to 300 songs on a cd in MP3 format.

If you record the songs as MP3 files instead of the normal WAV files, you can fit more onto a CD. But only SOME CD players can play MP3 CDs - only the newest ones. You might have to get a new CD player from the store to take advantage of this new technology.
