Usually a nanny will do other things along with taking care of your children for instance, they may live in your home (or not), serve full meals, clean the house, run errands, etc. Nannies are usually also very experienced in childcare and taking care of a home.
Babysitters usually provide snacks for children and usually do not live with the employer. They are also less likely to clean the home (thoroughly) and run errands. They are usually younger, less experienced people as well.
The experience level and age as well as job description are all things that will determine the differences in price between nannies and babysitters.

A nanny is pretty much a live-in baby sitter. They are there living in the home and are there 24-7. And develop a more closer relationship with the children because they are there and will be dealing with them for years on end. And their duties go beyond just watching the children like maybe cleaning or cooking. They are the next best thing to a parent. Obviously, they are more expensive to have, and that is why the well to do off or comfortable living people have nannies. A babysitter does the same thing but isn't living in the home, not as experienced compared to a nanny, and are hired on a temp basis and does not watch the children as long. Baby sitters are mainly used for an event, work, or for long errands for short periods of time. Usually are younger in age and are cheaper because they aren't doing as much.

I was a nanny for two years--it was the hardest job I ever had! It really made me appreciate how hard the stay at home parent works--
As a nanny, I did not live in, I worked 11 hour days, I was paid gas and for other incidentals--I did the grocery shopping, the clothes shopping, the laundry, and organized other details that pertained to the kids' lives. I was well paid, and the family paid for my first year in graduate school too.
If I ever babysat for the family for whom I worked, I was paid an hourly wage and the kids and I watched movies and ate popcorn. I laid on the couch and channel surfed after the kids went to bed. I was paid immediately when the parents arrived home. As their nanny, I was paid a salary and benefits. I loved their kids, and still keep in touch with them years later--but it's a myth that the nanny is "like part of the family." That's only if you pay "family" a salary....years later I think the parents still have a hard time dealing with the influence I had over their kids' lives, versus their own influence...that could be another difference between a nanny and a babysitter too....

A nanny is more profesional and hofefully has more experiance. Allot of the times you hear the phrase Live in nanny, that's becuz she lives there, cooks, cleans and takes care of the children, does laundry, etc. It's kinda like a wife, minus the woopie.:)
A babysitter is only available sometimes where as a nanny is full time. 24/7/365/ depending on what you work out.

A nanny is typically a long term person who becomes almost part of the family. They care for your children in your home and will do things a babysitter won't, like care for your children when they're sick and help with chores.
A babysitter (what I think of) is someone more short term, hired job to job or as needed on an occasional basis. They probably wouldn't care for your child if they're sick.

nannies are there to educate and care for your child, they are a constant person. Where a babysitter will come and just play and be there for your child, they are not usually the same person all the time and don't usually offer the same quality of care. A babysitter is also someone who just cares for your child occasionally.
