Well, usually if they truly believe they do repent. You can't assume they do believe until they repent.

For the same reason that people do not quit drugs despite knowing full well the various types of harm, physical, mental, spiritual etc, that usage does to them. Sinful and immoral lifestyles are habit forming and addictive. As the saying goes, once a junky always a junky. Not to say a life-long abstinence is impossible, but that nagging, yearning recollection of those guilty pleasures will always be lurking in the shadows, tempting one to deviate from the path they know is best for them.
Also, we live in a culture/society that is growing increasingly anti-religious/spiritual, and it is intimidating for the average person to go against the percieved norm by repenting and embracing a more wholesome and pure lifestyle.

Nobody can prove any gods, much less a specific god, exist; many people will tell you their god exists but no others, but will never be able to prove it, even if they think so. Some will threaten you with eternal pain or promise eternal joy to get you to believe in their god; these are all stories, created for people who were scared long before we understood the universe. Now we have no more reason for these superstitions.

How terrible the bible in particular is:

How silly and horrible religion in general is:

-------------------------

Pascal's wager:

"If god exists, it's infinitely better to believe, since you get heaven instead of hell for eternity. If he doesn't, it doesn't matter since you're dead anyway. So overall it's better to believe"

This is, of course, false.

Some of the problems with the argument:

* The implied assumption that god may exist (with a 50% probability, no less!)

* The assumption that there is an afterlife with a heaven and hell

* The assumption that the god cares about belief in him/her above all else

* The assumption that if you believe in a god, it will definitely be the same god that actually exists.

* The assumption that you lose nothing if it's false. You have lost a great deal, from time praying to a nonexistent entity (somebody mentioned just today praying several hours a day!!!) to morality (your god may ask you to hurt other people) and much more besides.

* The assumption that people can believe in something simply because it benefits them. Would you believe goblins exist for twenty bucks? Why not?

* The assumption that any god won't see through the "believing just to get into heaven" ploy.

this best way for me to answer you is with scripture

2 John 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

There is a big difference between understanding the concept of hell and actually believing in it. I understand the concept of what christians mean when they tell me to go there, yet I do not believe there is such a place because there is no evidence that supports its existence.

Saying there is a god does not make it so. That is not evidence. And for me, no evidence = no belief.

I've known a lot of people who thought they would wait until they got to the end of their lives and then make a change. They wanted to live their lives in direct conflict to what they know to be wrong, and make a change right at the last. They miss out on all the goody and the opportunities to grow and become the best they can be, and just like a lot of people don't plan for retirement and don't realize the seriousness of it. It's an "iffy" thing at best
Hope that helps. Good luck

Many possible explanations...

1. They dont care about their future.
2. They dont care about God or his law.
3. They deny responsibility for their sin.
4. They believe they are good.
5. They have conceptualized God into a wimp who is not going to punish sin.
6. They worship Satan because they believe he will give them a future in his kingdom.
7. They willingly trade this life for the next.
8. They believe they can work their way out of it either in this life or the life to come.
9. They are hypocrites that think they are righteous yet do not live up to the teachings of Jesus.
10. They deny God altogether.

Repent to what? There is no God. It is a made-up human concept that has been made into a career for people. The threat of hell is meant to keep the flock in lock step while they get sheared.

Perhaps people refuse to live in a fear-based state, but choose to live in a state of acceptance and anticipation of what life has to offer. Perhaps they believe in a God of love.
