Different people have different requirements for sleep. I need around 10 or so hours since I'm very lethargic, but some people i know get by on less than 5 hours of sleep.
How do you know how much you need? Only you can say, really. Do you feel refreshed each morning? Do you have dark circles or bags under your eyes? Do you get sleepy by noontime? The answers to those questions will help you determine if you need more sleep.
Try adjusting your bedtime by hourly intervals, if you insist on using exact numbers (although that's hard to do, i suggest you go by feel). Also instead of adjusting your bedtime try taking short powernaps (an hour or less?) when you can.
Hope I helped :D

The norm is 8 hours. Some people need 10 hours. The younger you are and the older you are, the more sleep you need.
Depriving yourself of sleep is a far greater hazard to yourself and others than getting too much - of which there is no such thing - depending on which authority you talk to..

you should sleep around 8 hours per day. I am schizophrenic and if nutty thoughts keep me awake and if I sleep less than 4 hours a night i start having suicidal thoughts. sometime ago I was on medication that made me sleep 12 hours a day and some people sleep 12 hours naturaly.

Every individual is different. When I was younger, 4-5 hours of sleep was plenty and I felt better if I didn't sleep really long, but everyone is different. Don't push your body to the limit, either, thinking you can keep going or working without much sleep because sooner or later, it catches up with you and you'll just crash.

test yourself, no alcohol, same routine,
sleep 3 days of 6 hours,
then 3 days of 7 hours,
then 3 days of 8 hours,
then 3 days of 9 hours.
You'll soon find the rhythm your body needs.

Normally, you're supposed to sleep at least eight hours, but sometimes you still feel tired after sleeping so it wouldn't hurt to add an extra hour of sleep. Try to arrange a sleeping schedule that'll fit in with your work schedule.

You need at least 7 hours but no more then 9. Too much and too little is bad for you (too much gets your clocks weird). So go to bed like at 11.

The healthiest way to get your beauty sleep is to sleep in a quiet room, lights turned off, and to sleep for 8-10 hours. If you don't get your sleep, you WILL get grumpy, tired, hungry very easily, and annoyed with anything.
