Unfortunately, I know for sure that there is a rapid-cycling type of Bipolar disorder, because I have it. As another person stated, rapid cycling is defined as having four or more mood shifts in a year. I am actually classified as an ultra rapid cycler. I can have several mood shifts in a single day. Often, we also have something called mixed states - this is when a person is very depressed and at the same time manic. Not all manic episodes are fun like the general population often believes. These times can be filled with terror and confusion and energy and despair all at the same time.
Thank God that there are some effective medications now.

technically, any more than 4 shifts in a year is considered rapid cycling. someone may only shift a couple times a year, or a couple times a week. none of it is very nice. bi-polar (manic depression) sucks.

Yes, there definitely is. I've been living with it for as long as I can remember. I'm what they call an ultra-ultra (or ultradian) rapid cycler. It doesn't sound like a very technical term, but it is a real thing nonetheless. Also, children with bipolar tend to be rapid cyclers.

How rapid are we talking here? Bipolar disorder is what used to be Manic-Depressive, but it normally shifts more slowly. Maybe its a hormonal imbalence?

Yes, there is. Instead of taking weeks or months this person could take hours to cycle.
