Fear is the lack of understanding and leads to evil. A religion that does not elevate thought to its proper place is a dead religion, and perfect love casts out fear. Life sometimes takes time.

Because fear is a really good controlling factor. It makes the religious people obedient. Instilling fear in members works. Like hell, armageddon. Things like that. Think Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses, Muslims, and many more. They live in fear because that's what they are taught. It isn't very loving is it.

Your thought that religion was about loving each other centered around God and being peaceful is right, but that is the ultimate goal or that is what should be achieved.
But, In the beginning it starts with FEAR of God and committing sin. Next stage is overcoming FEAR and doing one's duty responsibly as DUTY without being attached to the fruit of the duty. Third stage is the overcoming even the mechanical DUTY consciousness, but doing the same thing out of LOVE towards God and that LOVE reflected towards others.
While, it is certainly true that LOVE is the ultimate, it begins with FEAR, progressing toward DUTY without FEAR and reaching PURE LOVE only.

How do you know they live in fear? You may be only hearing what you want. Take a world religions course at the college level and I think you would see how ignorance affects YOUR beliefs on religion.

not all religious people. Some religion teaches to fear, some teaches not to fear. You have to know all religions before coming to conclusion.

I don't know that they live in fear, but they certainly seem to try to invoke it in other people. Threats of hell, claims that their god hates (fill in the blank), proclamations about who is going to get "got" by God, and so on.
Wait a minute...they do live in fear. The devil is their ultimate boogeyman, hiding in everything from Sunday Night Bingo to the push-up bra to children's books. And they eagerly go about to try to ban such things to protect the rest of us from their fears.

a lot of religious groups mostly small ones like the Bahais and the FAlun Gongs, have been [persecuted because of their beliefs. The are always bullied by the Bigger ones and it ultimately leads to Chrsitians, who tend to be intolerant and hateful in my experience. I am christian but i hate the intolerance.

Most religions have sadly been perverted into fear-generating devices.
