Well, I think recycling would be a good thing, but if there's no place to bring your old stuff to, it's quite hard to do. But as you live in he desert you can do quite a lot. The problem is that you'll initially need to invest quite some money, and that alternative sources of energy can take quite some time before they pay themselves back (5 to 25 years), dependent on how much you want and can do of course. I'm not a alternative energy specialist, but you can use solar panels and there are very small modern wind turbines for domestic use (they fit on the roof of a stone house or in a garden). There are also "geothermal heat pumps" (do a Google on it) that use heat from the earth to produce energy.
But these are already quite drastic changes. To start with you can try to cut on the use of electricity and fuel.
- Do as much as possible in the dish-/washing machine every time, so you'll need to save up your dirty stuff untill you've got enough to completely fill the machine. Do not change clothes 3 times a day just to put it all in the washing machine. Though maybe if you are swetty in the desert, you might be thinking different about it.
- Do not take showers longer than you need. This means never more than 5 minutes. Do not take a bath, maybe just on your birthday. Whirl-, swimming- and bubble bathes are notorious energy consumers. Don't even concider installing them in your house or yard.
- Switch off all electrical equipment when you don't use it. Also don't use the stand-by mode, because than it still uses quite some electricity.
- Unplug all trafo's and adapters/battery chargers/powers supplies when not in use or when the battery is full. Although it may seem different, these things still use electricity when you leave them plugged in useless.
- When it's hot, do not set the airco too low, also not in the car. In the car I believe the fuel consumption increases about 10 % when you switch on the AC. Driving with the window open also uses a lot of extra fuel due to extra air resistance, but I don't know how much actually. When it's cold, don't turn on the heating too much. Maybe a sweater can help to keep you warm some time longer.
- Some energy distrubutors deliver "green electricity", electricity produced (as much as possible) with 0-emission (bio-energy/sun/water/wind). You probably pay more (shouldn't the pollutor pay for their own garbage, strange world isn't it), but I think that people who can afford it just have to take the responsibility to do it.
- Use energy saving bulbs or modern LED lighting (I believ it's not yet for sale, but will be soon, within a year or so) and switch off the lights and heating/cooling and othe electrical equipment in rooms you are not using.
- Do not buy new stuff when you actually don't need new stuff. Sometimes it can be better if you have a very much energy consuming washing machine that's still working, maybe it could be better to by a new more energy saving model, but this is for you to calculate what would be best. Everything you by must be produced, packed, transported, and distributed. All of this cost a hell of a lot of energy. This goes from your cell phone, your trousers to your car.
- Do not buy a V8 that you only use to bring the kids to school and do grocery shopping and other stuff you can do in a normal sized car too. The best would be bikes, public transport and if not otherwise possible, a hybrid car.
- Do not travel by car or plane if you do not need to. In the desert this can be tricky though. If you don't need to cross oceans, the train can be a very green and economic alternative. I think people worldwide should start thinking about this some more, because I think it will not take very long before air-fairs will be plunging skywards. People are jumping in SUV's, (private) planes and choppers nowadays like it's everybodys constitutional duty to do that sort of stuff as much as possible, but they don't realise these are the vortex in the global fuel reserves and I believe (one of the) largerst contributor to human CO2 emmissions, and still growing fast.
You know, in fact you must act like you can't afford to pay the electricity bill and the fuel for the car, and you must drastically limit the use of it. Think about everything in your house that uses electricity, fuel or water (water will be more expensive in a few decades than fuel and wars will be fought over it) and think about if it is really necessary you have it switched on, or that you use it at all. This will mean you'll need to live a more concious life.
I'm happy that you are willing to react now you realize what's happening to the world. Though maybe your grandchildren will not see very much of all the efforts you will be making to contribute to reducing global warming, because in fact we are already too late wit taking big action, but we must not yet give up befor the fight has begun, and try to save whats still left to be saved, and they will be proud that you at least tried and fought for them when you realized what was happening.
Good luck with your efforts and contributions to a better environment in our childrens future.
Edit:
And to the guy above me (please check the describtion about himself in his profile and you'll se he can't have done much reading, he doesn't really realise that global warming doesn't have much good in it at all. The warmer climates will bring all kinds of (deadly) diseases to places these viruses can't live yet. Maybe this wil set off the pharmacueticals to start some reasearch on these diseases. There will be more and heavier storms all over the world. Water levels will rise, but about 90% of earth economics is produced in the area's that are going to be flood. Maybe there will be some places on eathy that will get a better climate than before, but in most places this will not be the case. Already started in many area's in the world is desertification. This means that large parts of the world will turn into desert. Africa, and most likely South America too, if they don't stop logging, will be dry deserts from north to south. China and Russia will be dry deserts for large parts. (those billions of thirsty chinese people will be coming to get oil, and water, wherever they can track it down and they are thoroughly preparing for this kind of future already). Also the US will encounter large scale desertification. Maybe then this guy does want to move to commie Canada. This desert everywhere scenario is not to be expected in a few years, more like hundreds of years or even longer, but not every doom-scenario is a scare tactic or an opportunity for science to be sure of their jobs and funding. This idea is just hilarious. This guy should be banned from the use of any electromechanical device, because without science it (or maybe even himself if he's born in a hospital) shouldn't have existed, as he doesn't really respect science-age advantages over stone-age advantages.

In general, deserts have a hard time retaining heat during for the night, and it doesn't do a good job of keeping it cool during the day. Water is usually good for absorbing heat, that's what a desert lacks, h2o. But there should be a recycling center, if not, maybe you should start one.
recycling is a good start to prevent further global warming because it saves energy, energy that uses coal to produce.

recycling is the best thing. save energy. unplug all electronics that you are not using. every single little thing you do will help the timing of the Global Warming slow down,
also, global warming cannot be prevented. its gonna happen.... but the more we keep or world clean, the later global warming will happen. according to scientists, global warming will start taking effect in about 30 years.

Fortunately there is nothing you can do to help or hurt. Global warming is an earth cycle thing which has been going on before man was on the earth

stop falling for the hype,of global warming.Recycle, use less energy, conserve,if this makes you feel better(it does seem to make the world look better than trash strewn about) but realize that the doomsayers are playing on your fears, every thing they have to say about global warming brings doom on us all, never a good thing to say like more crop growing areas. If you look at the populations, youll notice that most humans live in the near equitorial zones, few live in the artic regions. All of this hype is to make you scared into making a decision that your bad and that the human race is bad, does it make you feel guilty,is that why we ask what can I do?Use that energy for some greater purpose other than letting a bunch of scientist looking for government grants and funding(whom have only taken two out of three scientific steps to create this hypothesis)and do something that will make the world a better place, you shouldnt have to be scared into wanting change, but should decide it for yourself

Can't believe there's no recycle bins! Oh well... You can try to save the energy from your computer and other electronics (only use it when you need to). If there's cars, don't use it too much (like I said, only use it when you need to). Hope this helps.^^

Small fly like me can't do anything except the governments and the rich bosses because they are the powerful one who can change the fact of life. As for me, life goes on.
Indeed, Global Warming is truth and not fake. And I propose using water to replace petrol or oil for all combustion engine, yet none of us is interested.
Water is break down into H and O because water is plentiful on earth, 77.7% are water. I know it is another way round but I insist this should be the water break down to H & O.
God bless us when the times come....

You can stop using fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gases) The burning of these causes more greenhouse gas to be made these gases supposedly let more heat in to the Earth causing the icecaps to melt.
