Manchester has been chosen as the surprise location of Britain's first Las Vegas-style "super-casino".
The decision is a blow for Blackpool and London's former Millennium Dome who were bookmakers' favourites.
Ministers say the casino will boost regeneration, but opponents argue it will lead to more problem gambling.
Do you live in Manchester?
Will the new casinos benefit local economies?
Are you a gambler?
Do you know anyone who has suffered from gambling addiction?
Are Las Vegas-style casinos a good idea?

The creation of a super casino anywhere in the UK is not a particularly good idea. The local economies of every city in the UK are not set up to deal with one. In the past licence's have been issued on a population basis, so theoretically you have enough people in an area to support the casino.I'll just run through a couple of cities for you,
London has 27 casinos and a population of around 7.5 million.
Birmingham has 8 casinos and a population of around 1 million.
Manchester has 5 casinos and a population of around 500 000.
Non of these areas could support a large casino, the reason given for only opening 1 regional casino was that there needs to be a study done on the local impact of a large casino. I think I must have missed something? The new large casino will have around 50 tables, if they wanted to do a study on the impact of a large casino then why didn't they use Star city in Birmingham it has 40 tables and has been open since 2000. Surely it would be a better proposition than have to wait for a new casino to be built so you can study the impact of an extra 10 tables!
Lead to more problem gambling! I don't think so within 30 Min's travel you can reach about 10 casinos, so if you want to punt it's easy another casino won't make it any easier.

The government wants the extra tax revenue so no matter whet we do the will keep making super casinos. I to have seen the gambling problems down under and share your concerns. Scratch cards are bad enough but a mega-casino is much worse. All we can do to help is make people aware of the dangers of gambling more than they can afford to.

No, I wont be going, casinos are a fiddle to favour the casino not the punter. You'll pay lots of money on the tables and slot machines but get very little back, and the casino make a big fat profit.

I live in Manchester, i think the money generated from the casino is going to have a positive effect in the communities we live in. Manchester is a great city and by beating off the bookmakers favourites clearly proves that Manchester is the best!!!!

the best things to come out of Manchester are the Buzzcocks and Joy Division/New Order.......casinos are a great thing and of course you have to deal with all the bad that goes with the good....i've seen lives ruined by gambling....i have seen big wins by people playing both tables and machines.....overall i think its a good thing.....R.I.P.
