It had a coastline (around Trieste in Italy), and with it a Navy. The Austrians even settled as far away as in the Adamans islands in the Bay of Bengal, although it wasn't tenable. You might also remember in 'The Sound of Music' Captain Von Trapp was a Naval officer, which is a pretty dire career path to take in a country no longer with an Ocean. The Nazis found him a boat to command berthed on the other side of Europe, but he escaped

What can we learn from this? If you want a navy you need a coastline.

It was ruled by Emperor Francis Joseph. He was a member of the Hapsburg Hohenzollern Dynasty. The Austrian Hungarian Empire stood on very shaky grounds along with Germany ruled by Wilhelm II, England, ruled by George V, and Russia, ruled by Nicholas II. They were all cousins. Great Britain was the only one of these countries that had a limited monarchy, thanks to the Magna Carta, and the English Parliament. Were it not for the Magna Carta, and the intervention of the United States on the side of Great Britain and France, Great Britain would have lost their monarchy. WWI was the end of the absolute monarchies in Europe and Russia. WWI was started by Gavril Princip a young Serb. He shot Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife Sophie.

All of this shows just how absolute power can bring about the total destruction of a family.
