I am trying to go to a Historical Black University and skip over the Out of State Fees lol. I have family I could stay with in every state I'm considering I just need to know how long I'm going to have to live with them before I claim residency and got to school. Thanks!

different colleges have different policies. the only way to be sure is to call the school and ask. the school i work at doesn't charge out-of-state tuition. the school i was at before had an 18-month policy. a year is typical, but not guaranteed.

It's usually a year. Many universities accept open bank accounts as criteria for residency, so open a couple bank accounts and have the statements sent to your relatives house. When you make up your mind, just say you were in that state...it's cheating the system but that's how you get ahead in this wonderful, capitalist society that we live in!

I know in some states it is as much as 2 years.... and the checking account idea is good, but more often they ask for utlity bills in your name, or rent or mortgages in your name. Makes it kinda suck. Basically, they want to make sure that you have been paying taxes to support the school first.

Why does it have to be a Black University?

I'm pretty sure that for most colleges - it's a year.
