I was given a computer today that came with a Windows upgrade CD. This was disk was purchased used by the previous owner to upgrade from Windows ME to Windows XP.....it has SP1 on it. In other words, it's an XP upgrade disk with SP1.

Is there some way I can use this disk to get SP1 installed on my computer? I already have XP Home Edition.

I need SP1 since I've never downloaded SP2 (I've been told by both HP and MS that it could cause some of my software and hardware to stop working). I don't need that headache.

But, I need SP1 to enable LBA so I can "see" and "use" all of a 250GB hard drive I installed as a secondary drive.

Other than telling me to download SP2 and forget about trying to get SP1 from this upgrade disk, what can you tell me.

Please bother telling me to install SP2, I already know I should do that.

Can I use this upgrade disk to install SP1 on my Windows XP computer or not?

Go to Microsoft.com and download SP2, this is assuming your OS is licensed. If not you can use any winxp cd w/sp2.

you can. what you would end up doing is running the setup program on the disk and at the bottom it will give you the option to "repair installation" choose this option and it will install all of setup on your computer without deleting any of you current files. you will need your CD KEY CODE to do this. it will run exactly like a fresh install. if you want, you can redo your system and reformat your HDD. the full version of XP is on the upgrade cd. if you do this option, you will get a choice to upgrade or full install. choose the full install and then wait till it's done..
