I can tell you that being a special agent for the railroad (rail police, cinder ****, gum shoe etc). A good general thumb for railroad property is any property within fifty feet of the center of the track. By the way i arrest people all the time because they just didn't know that they could not run along the side of the track, or the didn't think anything was wrong with riding their mountain bike along the tracks. ignorants is not a defense.

No, but I did walk through a, mile long train tunnel, which at the time had 2 sets of tracks...
This was in TACOMA, WA.
Actually the tunnel comes out in RUSTON, WA.
These are very busy tracks, and my friend and I were just messing around one night, down by the NELSON BENNETT TRAIN TUNNEL...A group of slightly older teens came along, and their mission was to walk through the tunnel.
So we all said WTH...
With flashlights...and NOT KNOWING the TRAIN SCHEDULE...
We went for it.
Now the Tracks are, well you know, CLOSE.
If two trains were to pass with us inside, there is like what "a foot or so between rail cars.
I was HOPING or praying a train would not come while we were in there...
Thank God one did not.
If one were to come, there is NO TELLING what track it would be on, There were 3 girls and 4 boys, I saw or remember one of my friends FREAKING OUT in there, CLOSE TO THE ENTRANCE, where we COULD STILL SEE DAYLIGHT... and a train came.
We were about 15 or 16 then, HE WAS SCARED REALLY BAD, FREAKIN!!!
So anyway, I can not imagine 7 people in a group and being in the middle of the train tunnel and seeing THE BRIGHT LIGHT of a LOCOMOTIVE(s) pulling 100 plus cars...and someone not getting KILLED.
We were STUPID.
For me that was about 20 years ago...
We were out for about 5 minutes, when a train came. WHEH!!!
But No, No train cops.
Seen em', but they never came while I was playing down there as a teenager.
Now there are signs all over, NO TRESPASSING, B.N.S.F. .
Both sides were pretty cool as a teenager, on the RUSTON SIDE it was a steep slope, under a high bridge...We used to climb up IVE VINES, well using footholds, to get to the undersidde of the bridge...
There was a creek that ran above the tracks, and the Other side, was SALMON BEACH, and the Narrows straight.
Now there is just ONE set of tracks, I wonder if some kid or kids were playing in the TUNNEL and were KILLED by a train.
We were lucky...
No trains, and no train cops...
DJH
Oh yeah, I remember one time, my best friend and I were in there with some other kids playing...
A train was comming FROM THE TACOMA WATERFRONT/ RUSTON WAY...
Michael was on the Track that the TRAIN was comming on, he could only think one thought...GET OUT OF THE TUNNEL!!!
He ran out, on the same TRACK Toward that speeding train(35 to 45mph)...He Jumped out of the way, to the LEFT, about 3 to 5 seconds before that train would have SPLATTED HIM ALL OVER THE PLACE.
That was probably my first wake up call.
But then, Fear was not part of my teenager blood, not really.

Never, I'm a responsible railfan, never trespassing, have the railroad hotlines in my truck, and I'm even an Operation Lifesaver presenter.
