There is not just one cause of depression. It is a complex disease that can occur as a result of a multitude of factors. For some, depression occurs due to a loss of a loved one, a change in one's life, or after being diagnosed with a serious medical disease. For others, depression just happened, possibly due to their family history.

Depressed people can be very difficult to be around, and yet they need more than the usual understanding and support from their friends and family.

Here is the following option to find help:

1. Ask people you know (your physician, clergy, etc.) to recommend a good therapist;

2. Try local mental health centers (usually listed under mental health in the telephone directory);

3. Try family service, health, or human service agencies;

4. Try outpatient clinics at general or psychiatric hospitals;

5. Try university psychology departments;

6. Try your family physician

7. Look in the yellow pages of your phone book for counselors, marriage and family therapists, or mental health professionals.
