my 7 year old retriever went in to get his ears cleaned out and when he came out his left eye was squinting i took him back and they said his tear duct quit working and it was common for old dogs i was wondering if it is common or if they might have done something to him and if there is another way to treat it besides the expencive cream they prescribed him they said he would need the cream and the drops for the rest of his life

There is a condition called keratoconjunctivitis sicca (also called dry eye) where the tear ducts do not produce the adequate amount of tears to keep the eye moist and comfortable. And i work at a vet clinic, and i do not know of anything they could have done to cause this, or if they could cause any other eye condition that would cause him to not produce enough tears. But if it is KCS then he will require some kind of drops for the rest of his life to make him feel comfortable. Maybe do some research on this, and see if it sounds like this is what your vet was talking about. Good Luck, i hope this helps.

If you don't think it is KCS and you think your vet may have done something to cause this you can always get a second opinion from another vet. You will just have to pay the cost of a medical exam. If i was unsure of a vets diagnosis i would get a second opinion. And there are dog eye specialists, but they are VERY expensive. But if you did decide to go to an eye specialist they will definitely be able to tell you what he has. I wish i could help you more. Good luck with your dog's eye, i hope it is something that will heal soon...

Take her to the vet. suited to no longer play around with eyes with abode cures, you may desire to do extra harm than stable. she would be able to in all risk choose for some antibiotics and her tear ducts possibly block and can require a flush by potential of the vet.
