Generally, these cases only become effective if the defendant has a long history of mental illness, for example a schizophrenic off his meds becomes paranoid believing that everyone is out to get him, he stabs someone, he'll most likely end up like Hinkley, in a mental hospital for a long time. These defenses only keep the person out of prison-often times the time they spend in a mental institution is longer than prison

Just remember, unlike "Law and Order" the mental defect plea usually doesn't work to well in the court room.

Hilyer killed his roommates with a hammer and was found guilty but mentally incapacitated. This rendered him not guilty, but remanded him to psychiatric custody.

Susan Smith, the mother who drove her car into a lake in South Carolina about 10 years ago or so... her kids were in the car and they drowned.

Also, that weird beyotch from Texas last year who was convicted of killing her sons in a bathtub. I think she was found to be insane.
