I know 2 ways:

#1: Start by making a ponytail and while you're making it, as you put your hair through the elastic for the last time, let go of the elastic while your hair isn't all the way through the elastic.

#2: Make a ponytail and then use bobbypins to pin your hair into a bun shape. You can also do some wacky hairstyles through this method.

To put your hair into a messy bun, first you have to attempt to put your hair into a high pony tail. Then you fold the pony tail in so it makes kind of like a ring. Then you loosen it up a bit and put the pony tail holder in.
