The fridge does not know, what happens is when the door closes it presses in a little button, somewhere on the door or the edge of the fridge where the door closes, when this is pressed in then I am sure it somehow releases something that stops a circuit being made and so the light goes of. When the door is opened, the little thing pops out, thus releasing whatever it has pressed in and the circuit becomes complete again and so the light comes back on.

A good 21st century refrigerator, like most major appliances, caters to the desires of their human masters. This is absolutely learned, conscious behavior, because refrigerators know that if they didn't turn on the light when the door was opened, they'd be severly punished, just as their 20th century ancestors were.

There's nothing amazing about this, by the way. It's absolutely natural for major appliances to exhibit an instinct for self-preservation.

I certainly hope that your post doesn't mean to imply that refrigerators are somehow inferior to other appliances, or that they, like microwaves and the low-level brands of toasters, lack a qualitative, unified consciousness. If so, I think it's inappropriate to use a venue like Yahoo Answers as a soap-box for your anti-appliance rants.

I hope we can stop prejuidice against refrigerators in our lifetime.

You can usually see a light switch when the door is open. Activate it by hand and have a bunch of fun. Won't cost you a dime.
