The question is too large to answer here. However, I would include the Getty Museum, West Hollywood restaurants, Santa Monica beach area, Venice Beach, the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Disney Hall, and Universal Studios. Try to visit something in the Hollywood Hills like Yamaguchi Skyroom. American Idol tapes at the corner of Hollywood and Vine. Good luck.

ok, let's see if I can get a few things nobody said yet...

- LA County Museum of Art (BEAUTIFUL stuff.. and I think the getty is kinda overrated, COUGH COUGH! and it's next door to the La Brea Tar Pits which are free to just walk around and look at... REALLY interesting!!)
- Chinatown (Hill St. exit off 110 freeway.. eat at Foo Chow, it's the restaurant that boasts "RUSH HOUR WAS FILMED HERE", their food is great)
- Hollywood & Highland shopping area (fun to see the weirdos.. I mean, "STREET PERFORMERS" on the sidewalk)
- Rodeo Drive (fun to walk around and window shop and look for stars =) )
- Hollywood Hills/Beverly Hills is just fun to drive around and look at the million dollar homes
- 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica has great shopping and more performers

have fun!

The #1 attraction that most people want to visit is the Getty Museum, it features 360 views of the city, and is located high atop a mountain.

There's also Universal Studios/Citywalk, but it costs $10 to park there

Venice Beach
http://www.venicebeach.com/
a crazy atmosphere with street performers, cheap t-shirt shops.
the only restaurant I've been to there is called the Sidewalk Cafe, tell them I sent ya! (joking)

Santa Monica Pier
http://www.santamonicapier.org/
on the boardwalk, there are rides, and food and stuff, it's also close to the
3rd Street Promenade where there are more higher class stores and more restaurants

you can also attend tapings of TV shows if you get tix in advance and are interested in sitting for a very long time, (sitcom tapings can last for as long as 9 hours!)

there's always Disneyland and California Adventure, in Anaheim, 30 miles south of LA

You are asking about the SECOND largest city in the United States, so I would imagine that what ever you want to do, what ever you want to see you will be able to find it here.
