i can't speak for everybody and i have no idea how much it will hurt you, but i've had 1 root canal and it hurt less than a regular filling and it hurt a lot less than the 3 teeth i've had pulled, which were the 2 worst dentist appointments of my life... and i've had many. honestly, the shot beforehand hurts worse than most of the things i've had done. plus the anticipation of the pain is almost worse than the actual feeling of pain. now, this doesn't mean it won't hurt for you. i don't know what your pain tolerance is, mine is very low, and i don't know what else you've had done to your teeth, 'cause my root canal came after 2 of my 3 tooth extractions, so i had something to compare it to, but i totally understand you being scared, 'cause i even get a little scared when i have to have my teeth cleaned. also with me, it seems like the more scared i am about an appointment, the less it hurts. so maybe this could also work in your favour. anyways, i wish you lots of luck with your appointment and/or appointments. with my root canal it took 2 appointments, one for the root canal and the second to put the cap on. but that one was really a breeze, i didn't even have to have a shot! GOOD LUCK! : )

cheers,
Shauna!

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 20 years and this is not right. Expect some pain and soreness, but you have a full blown infection and some of the nerve is still there. The swelling is caused by infection, the sharp pain by a nerve and no Kanka pen is going to help. First thing is stay on the antibiotics and keep rinsing with warm salt water 3-4 times a day. Call the dentist and ask him to re-open the tooth and clean it out again. My guess is you will need an endodontist because molar root canals ALMOST always have extra tiny canals that are almost impossible to see. If you get shooting pains simply touching the tooth now, even when you go through the antibiotics and it feels better, it will get worse again. Sensitive to cold air is also an great indicator that an infection is present and there is still parts of the nerve present. Don't wait on this as a full blown infection can spread and cause other issues. If this dentist has not done many, many molar root canals, then you should see an endodontist. These thingsare too tricky for a general dentist, I don't care how good they are, 2nd molars are a tough call, the bottom ones are the most difficult and can have 5 roots. Please speaks to h/her and ask if you should see an endodontist and have one referred to you. Good luck, Marie D~

Root canals don't hurt any more than regular fillings, they just take longer. I had one last month, and it took just under an hour. Your jaw might get sore from holding it open for so long, but that's it. Ask your dentist to explain the procedure to you. Just remember, the anesthetic eliminates the pain. (I also have to get a crown on my molar, because the tooth had a deep crack in it, causing pressure and temperature pain. No big deal.)

I had one too and it didn't hurt at all. The hardest part was holidng my mouth open so long but they gave me a bite block to help. I actually started to doze off at one point so I wouldn't be worried about it. I had no pain at all.

Don't scare! It's one of misconception - hurting.
