my hair's a lot like that too.
try john freida "frizz-ease" - it's amazing. it makes your hair silky and smooth without greasiness. i swear by it. it has shampoo, conditioner, and all types of creams, gels, serums, and sprays for any style.
and you can't go wrong with a ceramic ionic straightener.

try using conditioner. Any will do. Some nice, inexpensive brands are Dove Conditioner, Oasis, Suave.
Leave it in for 60 seconds, then rinse. Comb your hair out, and then make sure you put in some mousse with protectant, or even some straightener serum. Frizz Eaze sells great mousse and straightener serum for a low price. Bursh your hair out again, and then either let it naturally dry, or use a flat iron to straighten it out. Maybe even scrunch it. =)

I have short hair also. First when my hair is wet I use mousse, then red-ken rewind 06 its a paste. Then let your hair dry a little and apply a small amount of molding wax. After that style and apply a little more wax. Try that. GOOD LUCK

Try Garnier fructis sleek and shine weightless anti frizz serum. You can buy it at a drugstore for 4 bucks. It lasts a long time, usually a month.

a product called bed head works for me- its by TIGI and is considered an "after-party" smoothing cream.
you will spend about $18 on it
it comes in a hot pink tube that has a huge bulb on the top.

coconut oil by far the best. You can apply it to wet or dry hair. In my experience wet hair is best but try it and see what suits.
