Well they say at that age, guys only pick on the girls they like, so If he is striking you repeatedly then he probably has a crush on you. If he stammers and drools when he talks to you, or looks like a deer in headlights when you talk to him, thats a good sign (assuming he doesn't look like that around everybody else also, because then he might actually be retarded).
Seriously though, at that age girls tend to be alot more mature in that department, so in the end, even if he does like you, you will probably have to make the first move because he will probably be WAY too scared too. I speak from experience here.
When you are older, if a guy is too chicken to ask you out then you probably don't want to date him anyway, and if he isn't to chicken he will make it obviouse enough he likes you. but when you are in middle school, most nice guys are way behind the curve and need to be helped along, because they don't want to do the wrong thing and don't know what the right thing is because all they know is power rangers and transformers :).
If he is a nice guy, makes you laugh, and is like a friend already, it will be well worth the effort of having to do all the work, in the end. Don't go after the easy jerks because they are the most emotionally immature ones of them all, and will not respect you more than a peice of meat. I speak from experience there too.

Middle school is the main timing that everyone starts dating and trying to get into a serious relationship instead of elementary school dating. You can tell if the guy likes you because you will be the only one he wants to spend his time with, holds your hand infront of everyone without any worrys or cares, isn't afraid to tell anyone they are with you, likes to brag about being with you, writes you alot of notes but becareful as they could become black male, a guy that wants to bring you home to his parents so they can meet you. A guy that shows love, loyalty, honesty, and trust. Good luck finding you the right guy.

In middle school, they commonly take things from you to get your attention. Like maybe at the lunch table they'll snipe your bag of chips, wait for you to look for them, then end up giving them back with a smile, because they got your attention. Same thing with pens and pencils. Also when they talk softer when there around you. It's really easy to tell. He'll talk in one voice with everyone else, and another with you. Just be observant.

he'll give you extra attention. but dont get It confused with the typical things that guys do like slapping gurls on the butt cuz he is usually doing it to more girls than just you. you can tell a guy likes you when he acts completly different around you.

The eyes chica, they never lie! Seriously, when a guy gazes into your eyes, you can tell by the way he looks at you, remember your eyes, not your body, if he is really interested and attracted to you.
