your awareness from your mind so that you could view your mind from an objective point of view? How can I view myself (as well as everything else) without looking through the filter that my ego puts on reality?

Great question! This is an extremely difficult thing to do. I've been exploring Eastern religions and philosophy for years now and what it sounds to me like you're after is the Zen Buddhist ideal of egolessness or mindfulness, also known as enlightenment. It is possible to have a brief moment of this experience and then have it slip away, and be unable to recapture or sustain it. You may have already had this experience. The goal is to be in that state continuously. Many people have pursued this their entire lives without attaining it, and Buddhists believe they continue to be reincarnated until they achieve this goal, so it may take many lifetimes. However the pursuit of this goal is important and often life-changing, even if the goal is not reached.

There are a great variety of books on the topic, as well as instructors to meet in person and centers for study and practice.
As something that must be experienced directly, this is not something you can get from a book alone. Books are, however, a wonderful way to begin an exploration.

I recommend _Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind_ by Suzuki Roshi as a
starting point, as I frequently see it recommended by others and I
often come back to it myself.

It takes a while to get this point of view but is well worth the effort. Just imagine you are someone else looking at yourself and listening to yourself.

Think outside the box....... lol
I used to do this all the time. I would take things personally, and then one day I looked at everything like I was watching from above. And WHAAAA, everything became clear.
I understand now that people do things without even knowing they are doing it, myself included, until I changed my perception.
Now I just watch all this drama go by me without getting hooked. ;)

Videotape yourself having conversations with others. Then watch the tape. You'll feel detached.
