Here are two in-depth reviews for the E500:

The camera operation is supposed to be good with two reservations:
* It has a startup time of about 2 seconds.
* It has a tiny viewfinder.
In this price segment you could also consider the Pentax K110D and K100D (same as the K110D but with image-stabilization), the Nikon D40 and D50 (the D50 has better AF than the D40 and it can use more lenses), and the discontinued Canon Rebel XT/ 350D.
My top picks would be the Nikon D50 and Canon Rebel XT. The biggest reason is that these are both better cameras. But part of the reason is also that Canon and Nikon both have more lenses to chose from and more cameras to upgrade to - if you think you might want to spend serious cash on photography in the future, Olympus is the wrong brand to start out with.
You can read in-depth reviews for these cameras at the two sites I provided above.
Full disclosure: I personally use a Nikon.

The Evolt E-500 is a SLR. It is a comsumer camera but of course I personally do not like it because you are limited right now to thirds system lenses. I would recomond the Nikon D50 or D70 or Canon XTi because Nikon and Canon take so much better pictures than Olympus.
