"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes
here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us,
he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is
an outrage to discriminate again st any such man because of creed, or
birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's
becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an
American...There can be NO divided allegiance here. Any man who says he
is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We
have room for but ONE flag, the American flag... We have room for but
one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room
for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

I think that a man of morals then or today would make and live by a statement like this.

Theodore Roosevelt was a man of honor and a man with vision. He is right. And as a "LEGAL" Immigrant, I agree with him fully. If you are going to come to a country, you should learn the language, learn the customs! Some people who come into this country, come to RAPE and STEAL from the government and from the people. I am tired of the school systems being used as day care centers. I am tired of welfare going to people who do not even care about this country.
The damn democrats and some of these idiot republicans have lost complete sight of this countries welfare! I know why the bureaucrats want illegal immigration... Because it is an accepted form of Slavery! They want illegal immigrants because then there will be more people below them. Working and serving their children and being their maids and Nanny's and servants. This is why the rich and democrats want all this, they bundle this belief with a belief that all the illegal immigrants want a better life. DON'T WE ALL?!?!?!?! But some of us do not break the laws...
Anyways... back to this brilliant man's quote, T.R. was truly a great man, President, and of course a great AMERICAN! God Bless America!!!!

i agree with nexus america is the melding part america doesn't have an official language so why only speak one? Does that mean being american means abandoning your culture and who you are? I don't think i agree with that. "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin I kind of lost him right about their

I like Grover Cleveland's inauguration speech much better, and it is more to the point.
The laws should be rigidly enforced which prohibit the immigration of a servile class to compete with American labor, with no intention of acquiring citizenship, and bringing with them and retaining habits and customs repugnant to our civilization.
Grover Cleveland

There's 6.6 billion people in the world today, 1.5 billion as of the time of that writing. Illegal immigration is a crime, and the people that've taken up residence in our country under false pretenses should re-think the whole thing, in my view...

I can just imaging the outrage if Bush quoted this. Nancy Pelosi and the Liberal dead-heads would cry "racism" or some other silly charge.
This quote is really impressive. I didn't realize Roosevelt was such a clear thinker. It's amazing how politicians could say something so honest back then. Today, a politician has to measure every word. It's appalling.

Yes, that's the ideal.
Of course it's quite different then, as most people have to travel by ship in order to get to America, and it was harder to keep ties with the old country because mail takes ages, there was no long distance telephone service, and no wire transfers. Now with the internet, it's easier to keep in touch with the people onel eft behind....
Just the effects of advances in technology and globalisation...

He was so right.
When my grandparents came here to this country they had to take English and American history/Constitution classes. When they got their citizenship papers they were proud to say they were Americans. While they never turned there back on their heritage they would only speak English in front of the children and only referred to themselves as American, never Italian/American.

Isn't he the guy who spent all his free time hunting & killing animals for pure sport? Yeah, I'm gonna go with WHATEVER he says! A man with 100 animal heads on his wall can't be wrong.
Oh...and to the ummm....lady.....above me....nowhere in this little speech of his did he mention the word "LEGAL."
So, I guess now we need to orgaize a party to go through Chinatown & rip down all their flags & Little Italy & do the same. Who's going to take the Jewish section? I'm not ripping down the Israeli flag. The Bible says whoever is a friend to the Jew God will be a friend to. I'm not touching their flag. I have a friend who married a man from Scotland. They fly both flags at their house. Shall I march right over & take down that cursed Scottish flag? OR do you just mean we shouldn't tolerate the MEXICAN flag? Yeah, that's what I thought.

A very wise clear thinker. His words were not muddled by the PC .BS of today.
You can not voice allegiance to two country's and be truly loyal to either one.
One flag, one language,(English) and one loyalty
equals ONE AMERICA.
Legal immigrants NOT illegal aliens.

Now, let's put this into context.
He was speaking of the discrimination that LEGAL immigrants experience when they come into this country. I think that most here would agree that if an immigrant comes to this country LEGALLY, then they deserve everything that any citizen could get.
Now, just stating that section and twisting it to make it like TR condoned illegal immigration is WRONG.
