i am thinking of buying a 1996 jimmy,are they safe.......etc..

Those were pretty nice vehicles when new, you need to see if you can find the maintenance records on this vehicle. Safe? What is safe these days? Most vehicles are built to be as safe as possible but you never know. You need to take the vehicle to an A.S.E. certified mechanic to have it inspected, usually cost 40-75 bucks. They can let you know what problems you might encounter in the future & definately the things that need to be repaired immediately. Good choice overall but beware untill it is inspected.

Well! You Know! It's a 11 year old vehicle! An old Jimmy wouldn't be my first choice in a used car. They don't seem to hold up very well.
Just my personal opinion.
But I have been a GM tech for 25 years. And I've worked on a fair number of these things.
