Not necessarily, but they can only hold her legally for 72 hours, then must have a hearing with a judge and someone who represents her 'legally' as well as someone to represent the 'hospital' side. If you want, you may call the hospital and find out, but they may not tell you unless you are 'related to' her or are her 'parent' or 'guardian' ...

Hello again....I answered your first question about this young girl, there is no doubt that her struggles are just beginning. This is truly a difficult question to answer. Have they made any sort of diagnosis? She may be depressed due to her current situation, but if she has a good support network on the outside, chances are that they will release her in the hope that she will not let the depression over being pregnant cause her to harm herself. Even though this may not be an ideal situation for her, if she has not been diagnosed with any illness like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, where medications are a must to regain any sense of normalcy, they have no medical reason to hold her there. However, if she remains suicidal, they may suggest some sort of halfway home for troubled teens where she will get the supervision she needs, and the medical attention she and her baby will need. Another choice would be foster care, especially if she is having problems at home. Parents are often too close to the situation to remain objective, and can add to the stressors which may be partially responsible for her depression about the pregnancy. At least in the beginning, while she is learning to accept that she will soon be a mother, she really does need to be somewhere that no judgements will be levied against her. Both she and her baby will stand a much better chance if they are placed in some type of nurturing environment. I feel sad for her, being so young and all, but she will most likely realize before too long that it isn't the end of the world, and that baby growing inside her loves her already, and always will. I wish only the best for your friend, Hazel. Best of luck to all concerned..take care

It may be that she doesn't necessarily need meds. Maybe she just needs counselling and someone to listen to her. Being as she is pregnant, they may let her go home and have someone just keep an eye on her.

There are many options. You might call her parents and ask about her. See what the status is. IF they are keeping her and you want to, you might ask about visiting her. It'd be good moral support from people showing that you want her around and love her.

Hope things work out for your friend.

a psychiatric floor in a hospital has more than just one way of treating patients and it sounds like your friend needs to learn coping stratagies...being pregnant also doesn't mean she can't take medication...but if the depression is caused by her personal situation (as opposed to a chemical imbalance) then counselling for her and her family will be helpful (both as an inpatient and an outpatient...

I hate to use the catch all phrase but "it depends". She will have a professional evaluation to examine her current mental state and may also have involvement from social workers to examine whether or not her support structure at home will ensure her safety.

But her problem is still there, sweetheart. She is still suicidal. They need to help her find other mental health options. They can't release her as long as she's still a threat to herself.

not until she has been thorougly assessed and they are sure that she will not cause harm to herself and unborn baby
they will also need to ensure that the environment that she goes back to will not cause her symptoms to redevelop again
