I live in northern California. Does anybody know the maximum number of cats allowed in a household (in terms of legality)?

...My parents have 9, and I'm thinking of volunteering at the local animal shelter. I don't want the animal shelter to find out we've got a little collection going on (really, they adopted us, lol) and tell us we've got to get rid of some. So I'm just curious. =)

like the number of wives a moslim can have: As many as you can support and keep healthy. If you get too many the local animal rights nazis will come after you and you will have a big attorney's bill keeping them off your back. Basicially the system is set up so that the "experts" get to decide and you are left with a guilty untill proved innocent headache.

Hi there...in all honesty each county, city has their own maximum requirements of pet animals per household and it's based on the local ordinances as well as home square footage as well as acreage. You can always ring the shelter anonymously and ask to learn what is the allowable limit in your city. Most cities will allow more than the max if you obtain the necessary permits, however this may not be financially feasible for many people.

Usually it's like, 6 or 7. You could try calling your local animal control, they should know the laws there.

on the tv show animal cops

it says the legal number of (dogs/cats)you can have is 4

but as long as none reports your parents your ok,but as long as all the cats are healthy and well cared for the legality may be over looked.

it depends on your county, but 5 is a good rule of thumb.
For example:
Unless a permit is obtained for a private kennel, commercial kennel, animal menagerie, or animal shelter, on parcels of less than five acres, the maximum number of cats or litters shall be five cats over four months of age and the parturition, rearing or harboring of not more than one litter of kittens per calendar year.
(County of Santa Clara)

It really depends on local ordinances. I don't think anyone really would care if all the cats are healthy and well cared for. The problems happen with the collectors of animals and the "cat ladies" who don't get their animals fixed. Please don't confuse that with people who work with TNR programs and feral colonies.

In California, it is a maximum of 3 animals total.

That depends on whether you're in an incorporated area or unincorporated area, if you're in homeowners' association and exactly what County and City you live in.

Go you your local government website for specifics, or your book of covenants if you live in a HOA.
