If you have a full copy of Windows Vista you can format the drive during the installation process. You just have to boot off of the DVD.
If you have an upgrade version, it will not work with a formatted drive.

that depends if you got the upgraded version of vista or not. if you have an upgrade no you don't have to. but if you have the full version it would be best to backup what you want to keep then format the drive then install the full version of vista. this way you are sure of a clean fresh install and will not have anything effecting it left from the earlier operationg system. hope this helps.

I have heard in some circles that at least some flavors of Vista have a destructive upgrade - meaning it destroys as it goes.
Make sure you have all important files saved to cd or other back up media before beginning a Vist a upgrade - even if the instructions say otherwise
