Egyptians randomly made up a religon. The rest of them believed it because they had to go along with it. Who is to say God wasn't just made up by the Israelites and they wrote legends about him? What makes him different?

Why are the religons of the ancient Egyptians "obviously made up" but monotheism is "possible"?

I'm just wondering. What sets it apart? I don't mean to call anyone's religon a myth...

ARE there people who believe in the religon of ancient Egypt and don't think it was made up?

(I just used Egyptian religion as an example...I'm agnostic)

For the person who said, "The Bible does."
Yes. And isn't it likely that the Bible's stories were just made up by the Israelites?

Who's to say that any of them are made up?
They could ALL be gods for all we know.

Or, they could be aliens.. who knows for sure? Nobody. I think that's the point.

What set judaism apart was their monotheism and the fact that their god doesn't allow for the worship of other gods.

well if you look at the wording of the first commandment it is clear that there were other gods around, but Jehovah was to be given preeminence.

I would strongly reccomend "The Secret Origins of the Bible" by Tim Callaghan as a good overview as to the current state of biblical archeology and the history of the Bible.

My opinion

Chance God exists: 55%
Chance the Israelites have it right: 0.000001%

God exists, but religion? Most religion is what you could call channelled information mixed with ego and in some cases it is all ego. Not that it is a bad thing, it is what it is. :)

it all depends on what u believe. there is no actual "percentage" or anything, its different with everybody, theres no number percent of a chance, i personally do believe in God and am a proud Christian, but there are also a lot of people who believe in evolution from monkeys, just stick to whatever u believe :]

Yes, they made him up. They probably believed in him, but the details of god talking to Moses and all that crap is false.

the Bible does, there are many accounts of Jesus in many other religions also. but the Jews don't believe that Jesus was the Son of God they believe he was a prophet. so the Jews didn't make up Christianity
