I also have taken Lexipro for major depression. What I am wondering is if this is a completely new medication to you and you never took an anti-depressant before? or if this is a med change from some other anti-depressent? If you have never tried it before please give it a chance to work and don't be afraid of it, it will make you feel better again. An anti-depressent doesn't make you feel high, it just makes you feel normal again if you are depressed. If you have any questions about taking it, the best thing would be to confide in your phychiatrist. Oh and if a general family practice Doctor has givin this to you, I would advise you to see a good phychiatrist. a phyc doctor is a doctor that has all the medical back ground the same as a family doctor, except he has taken four more years of medical college in phycology and phyc, and medictions. Depression is very dangerous as a diease! it can be fatal if not taken care of properly. It also is a "Brian disease" in the fact that your brain chemicals are out of balance and the meds help make it better and have normal chemical function again! It not something you can "just snap out of" like ignorant people believe. If this is a medication change please try it. and if you still feel terrible in 2 weeks please tell your doctor right away! I know what I am talking about! I have major depression and sevear anxiety problems myself. I have tried many medications to get better and i finally have one now after years of trial and error. Some would work only a little while and then stop, so the doc would try another! I hate the word"mental illness" it has a nasty stigma to it! what the real name should be is " brain chemical disorder" There is a national associtation of mental disorders, it is called by the initials of "nami" (national association for mental illness) They help fight the stigma assoctiated with all areas of brain chemical disorders. have faith in your self, you will do just fine! If you have a local chapter called Ami in your area please attend the meeting if you want and learn about how to help yourself. after all, YOU ARE IMPORTANT!

Lexapro isn't something of which you should be afraid. It's only a trial, so giving it a shot won't harm you. It is a very commonly prescribed medication. It'll give you an idea of whether it's a useful medication, evidenced by the effects it seems to have on your life and functioning.

As far as I know, Lexapro is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) which needs to be taken for at least a couple weeks to have full effect. It has what is called a cumulative effect. I'm surprised the trial was only for two weeks.

As long as you got the 2 week trial from a doctor and you were diagnosed you should be fine. I don't know what kind of reviews you read but everyone has different side effects. Remember with this drug you probably won't get instant results... it usually takes up to 4 weeks before patients begin to feel better.

If you are still hesistant, consult your doctor.

My husband has been on Lexapro for 10 months and has absolutely no problems with it. Any medication has risks associated with it. The alternative of depression or OCD or whatever you are taking it for is usually worse than the side effects of the medication.
