So I have this thing which happens almost everyday in english class. Sometimes our teacher calls on random people to read a paragraph or a few sentences in the book we're reading. For some reason I'm really nervous to read out loud. It just started this year. I'm a naturally shy person, but I have no problem volunteering to talk or share my opinion in that class or any other class. Whenever our teacher starts to call on people, I always start to panic. I start to breathe really fast. So when he calls on me, and I start reading, it sounds like I'm about to cry and my voice is really shaky. I have to stop every few words. It's really embarresing. I have a fear of public speaking, but this is just talking in front of my friends and classmates. It also happens in other situations sometimes when I get nervous. Has this happened to anyone else? if so, what did you do that helped? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

This doesn't sound like hyperventilation but like a panic attack. A panic attack is a form of anxiety that is intense and can feel scary. This used to happen to me in class, when I knew my time to talk would be coming up soon I started breathing harder and feeling hot and hearing my heart beating real loud. I also had panic attacks in many other situations. My mom took me to a psychiatrist which helped. Also I took a class at my local hospital that taught me how to recognize the symptoms of panic attacks and taught me how to calm down from them. It also helped me to see that there are others out there with the same thing, and lots of people have it. You need to learn about the stages of the panic attack and develop your own coping mechanisms with the guidance of a counselor or psychiatrist or a class.
Here is some info on panic attacks, I hope this helps. Also feel free to e-mail me if you have any more questions about this.

You are having panic attacks. You should talk to your doctor, who may referr you to a counsellor who specializes in panic and anxiety disorders. These professionals will be able to help you learn coping skills to deal with the anxiety you are feeling. For the problems in English, have a private discussion with your English teacher and try to come up with a solution that satisfies both of you. Most likely they are just as concerned about the problem as you.

you are suffering a panic attack when this happens to you .
i suggest you first just reliazie this fact and think about it when it happens next time.
another thing i suggest is that you just look up panic attacks on line and see if you can find a behavior modification you think seems like a good idea for you to help yourself.
i also would consider talking to the principal and or the guidance office and ask them to arrange it so you are not called on for a time . this is avoiding the problem to some extent but this would give you time to work on your own and or with someone else to
treat this consern .
i hope you do follow up on this as it may get worse if not treated and may spread to other area's of your life in the future.
dont panic about this panic attack problem it is very much treatable.

It could be your age and that your nervous to talk in-front of your friends in case you make mistakes. Or you could be having what is called a panic anxiety disorder! If that is the case you will need to be put on medication to calm you and help you to relax so this will not happen to you. You will have to see a Dr. to talk to him about this disorder and explain in detail how it is and how it comes on and how your chest is feeling when you are breathing as well. Take note of how your chest is feeling any tightness, feeling like you are gasping for your next breath? things like that as these are signs of panic anxiety disorders which you could be having. Talk to your family and see if these problems run in your family.

It's anxiety caused by a fear of speaking in public. Talk to your teacher privately and tell her what you're going through. Maybe she can not call on you. And you might want to check with your doctor. He might be able to help you with it. And don't think you're abnormal.........fear of public speaking is the number 1 fear of humans, number 2 is death!!!!
