I just had root canal therapy on one of my molars. Listen, there is nothing to be scared of, and I am not a fan of dentists either. They will give you Novacaine, which is a shot in your mouth to numb you up. Yes it is a shot, but it isn't even that bad. The first shot will just be a little pinch, but if your tooth is aching you won't even notice it. After the first Novacaine shot, you won't even feel the rest because you are all numbed up. You won't even feel your tooth aching anymore (which is a good feeling).

From there on out the only painful part is keeping your mouth open for a while. The dentist will ask you from time to time if you are doing ok. He/she does this to make sure that you are still numb. If you are starting to feel even the slightest bit of pain, motion to your dentist to give you more novacaine. Voila, you are back to being totally numb again and you won't feel a thing.

This is usually a two-step process. On the first visit the dentist will do the root canal therapy and then give you temporary fillings so your gums and tooth can heal. On the second visit (which will be like 1 or 2 weeks after your first visit), the dentist will give you permanent fillings and a crown.

REMEMBER: after the first part is over and you get your temporary fillings, once the numbness wears off you are going to feel pain. It hurts, but you'll be prescribed some antibiotics and pain relievers. I was given penicillin and vicodin (for the pain). Pain killers are going to be your best friend for a couple of days. The first 24-hr period is the worst. BUT, after 3-4 days, the constant aching pain will be gone and you won't even have to take the pain killers anymore. Your tooth will be sensitive for a while but that is normal. As long as you keep taking your antibiotics, your tooth will heal gradually.

So don't be scared. There is nothing to be scared of. Trust me :)

Basically, the procedure is very similar to a regular filling, it just takes a little longer. I had one done last month, and it took just an hour. The area is "frozen" with anaesthetic as usual, and the dentist drills through the top of the tooth as usual, but then he continues to drill deeper to remove all of the nerve tissue in the tooth. Then the "canal" is filled with a special permanent filler, and finally a regular filling is put on top. You won't feel anything more than with a normal filling. No big deal, but your jaw might get a bit sore from holding it open for so long. That goes away.

I have a really big fear of dentists but I had to have root canal once. They basically remove the nerve from your tooth.. something like that. it doesn't hurt because they numb you so much, infact you cant feel it at all. When you are in the chair just think of holidays or something good to take your mind off it. Don't be scared, it ain't as bad as it sounds and your tooth will feel waaay better afterwards! Good luck doll x

4 months ago I had root canal surgery on 3 adjoining teeth. It hurt for about 5 seconds when the dentist injected novacane. Otherwise the worst part was just laying there with nothing to do but count holes in the ceiling tiles. Didn't feel a thing.

This is the procedure in short...
First you will be numbed
Then a hole will be made in your tooth to reach the nerve of your tooth
The nerve will be extracted using files or a rotary system(you may feel pulling and pushing)
The sight will be irragated with a syringe that looks like a needle but isn't(this is to kill any present bacteria)
More filing
Then the sight will be filled with gutta percha(this is to seal off the canals)
Then the tooth will either be perm. filled or a temp. filling will be placed.

It's not as bad as it sounds. You should go home with ibuprofen(for inflamation) and a pain reliever.

root canal is basically a dead teeth. they take all the nerves out an stuff in tempera, later they put those silver coating over to protect the teeth. eventually if you dont take care of it soon enough it will break apart...

They drill then they use files to file the inside of tooth then fill and then you go back and have any remaining filing done and get cap if one is need. It dont hurt until the Novocaine wears of be prepared for pain and dont bite down on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
