What is supposed to be the advantage of fish swimming in a bait ball?

It seems like it is easier for the predators to gobble them up this way rather than just scattering.

The probablity of any one fish being eaten is less.
The ball gives the impression of being a large single organism which may put off some predators.

supposed to confuse predators but your right - seems like it sure doesnt work.
