Yes you can save both files as password protected. You need to go to file; save as; then tools; General Options. This will open up a window to put in a password to open and a password to edit. You can use both or only one of them. If you don't want anyone to open the file, then set as a password to open, if you want others to view, but not change then set a password for edit. Remember to write down or remember your password, because you will need it to open and/or edit.
If you use the password protect from the tools menu, then others can open and view. Also, if another user knows how to go in there and remove the protection that way, it won't do much good because it is simple to remove this protection, either click remove protection or simply download the file to your hard drive, then it no longer has the protection. The above directions will not loose the password if saved to another location.
Give this a whirl and see what happens. I am a MOS Master Instructor and this is one of the first questions I get asked in my classes by the students. Good luck!

When you " Save as "

Look for a menu called Tools to the right hand side
Click it to make a drop down menu
Select General options
Type in a password and select okay
Then save as, as normal

This is true for both Excel and Word

Note if you forgot the password the documents will be locked forever so do a password you will not forget.

On Excel, click "Save as". When the box comes up the upper right hand side of the window you'll see "Tools", select it, then look for "General Options".

Word Docs are easier. Go to Tools, select "Protect Document"

If you are worried about people reading your stuff i dont think you can... if you are worried about people messing with a document and changing it there are locks you can put on it...but that is only good if you are sending something to someone to look over and dont want them changing it.
