Smarty Jones is one of the cutest horses I have ever seen. Did you know that he was named after a crabby old lady who first owned him? It was such a shame that be lost the Belmont.
Barbaro was one of the greatest racehorses of all time. He won every race he finished. If I were his owner, I would have scratched him once he burst through the starting gate. Barbaro is in a better place now.
I love both of these horses, Barbaro a bit more than Smarty Jones because he was more recent. I also am a fan of Afleet Alex.

First of all, Barbaro would have blown away Smarty Jones on any track at any distance. Smarty Jones came along at a time of extremely weak 3 year olds, and never stuck around to face older horses. The owners were wimps, they took the easy way out and never let him get a chance as an older horse.
The previous guy made his list. I'll make mine. The actual greatest horses of the past decade were: Cigar, Siphon, Gentlemen, Candy Ride, Mineshaft, Formal Gold, Dubai Millenium, Horse Chestnut, Lamtarra, Invasor, Tiznow, Swain, Singspeil and none of them ever won the Kentucky Derby. Many of them eviscerated Derby winners when they faced them.
Not many people understand this, but at any given time, the best older horse would almost always beat the Derby winner (3 year old).

Who could not be a true fan of Smarty Jones and Barbaro they made the racing world sit up and take notice as to say look at me.
There are people out there who do not undertand the connection between man-women and horse and the true bond that can form and to them it is there loss to never have, they are to cold and uncaring about our animal kindgom just think who put us all here for a true purpose.

Yes, I'm a big fan of both but also a fan of Lava Man, retired Ouija Board (Supermare), retired Deep Impact, Wait a While, Honey Ryder, Papi Chullo, Tiz Wonderful(out of the Derby, he got hurt), Asi Siempre, Gorella, Tug o' War, Beautiful Daniele, The Tin Man, Nobiz Like Shobiz, High Cotton, Star Parade, Wilko, Attima, Too Much Bling, Discreet Cat, Showing Up, Validar, Invasor, Cacique, Tiz a Fire, Arson Squad, Proposed, Declan's Moon(going through a rough time), I could go on and on but I don't want to bore you. But you're right, I have a special place in my heart for Barbaro.
Edit: For the guy below, the list I made is not about horses of the last decade, they were actively racing in 2006. If I had made an attempt about horses of the decade, my list would have been different, hellooo.

My husband likes smarty jones. We both work at a race track and it is really sad what happened to him, but I am surprised they worked on him as long as they did most horses that break there leg are put down right then and there. I think they should have done that a long time ago instead of making the horse suffer like they did.

They are both legends in their on right. I was sad when Barbaro hurt is leg and it was even worse when I heard they had to put him down. He didn't get the chance he deserved.
