Here's the real reason:
After the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990s the UN put sanctions on Iraq. These were violated many times throughout the 1990s, and early 2000s. According to these sanctions Saddam had to let UN inspectors into Iraq. At times he did not. When these sanctions were first violated, we had the right to go into Iraq and take him out, but we did not.
Throughout this time period, which is Clinton-Bush, the CIA, and FBI, as well as Saddam himself, all said they had WMDs, which was against the sanctions. These reports were ignored until 9-11, and terrorism became a threat to the US, and its allies. For this reason, America thought it would be best if we removed Saddam from power. This is when we went to the UN, which said "no" to the invasion. Then Bush went to Congress who gave him the power to invade Iraq. The President gave Saddam about a week to turn himself into the US, and a conlfict would be invaded. Saddam refused and we went in and ousted Saddam from power.
NOTE:
Many people may say this war is illegal, however since Saddam did violate UN sanctions, we have the power to go into Iraq.
EDIT:
Julie N is also correct with some details I left out. He did violate the sanctions 17 times (I was unsure on the exact number), and certain chemical weapons were found in Iraq that did violate the sanctions.

Saddam violated UN sanctions 17 times since the end of the Persian Gulf War. President Bush was just the first guy who had the gumption to do something about it. I'm not sure why the UN opposed it, but let's face it, they're not the most honest organization in the world.
BTW, we did find WMD. Sen. Santorum released a document stating that the US military uncovered 500 bombs with sarin and mustard gas on them. Very potent chemical agents. Besides, Saddam was hung because he used WMD on his own people. What more do you want?

George W. Bush once referred to Saddam Hussein as the man that nearly killed his dad. HMMM could that be the reason? Revenge! Iraq sits on one of the largest and richest deposits of oil in the world. If the President and Vice President are oil men and they and their buddies could gain from all that oil do you think there might be an incentive to do something to get the oil? Bin Laden and Hussein detested each other so linking them is not a good idea. Yet it was Bin Laden and his gang that attacked the World Trade Center, Pentagon and would have gone for the Capitol had they not been stopped over Pennsylvania. Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11. Could it be we were deceived into thinking Saddam had weapons of mass destruction to get us to war for other reasons? All of this is worth thinking about. The answer is in there.

Why we were there in the first place is a multiple choice answer since the administration has changed the reason several times. In the name of oil, we were told it was WMD, bin Laden, terrorists...whatever seemed to pacify the American people at the time.

Why do people still ask this question? We are there because Bush says we should be there to finish the job.

We are there because we allowed our President to convince us that it was suddenly imperative to national defense that we invade Iraq, depose Saddam Hussein and install a democratic government.
Oh and those pesky WMD's....

Weapons of Mass Destruction!! Oh wait, we didn't find any. I know, Saddam was funding Al-Queda. Darn, no proof of that either; but he was a bad man. Yes! I know. It was a hot bed for terrorists camps...no that was Afghanistan. Surely, it couldn't be for the oil............

...somebody fill you in?
Someone should have taught you grammar and spelling first, before you started asking dumb questions.
At least we can agree on the fact that you admitted that your question was stupid.
