Or that the entire universe is just a series of thoughts god is dreaming up and that God is experiencing these 'dreams' through' us, it's creation?

It occurs in many religions, and is actually starting to be entertained seriously in physics as well (not that the universe is an illusion in the mind of god, but that it is an illusion projected by OUR minds - see the holographic paradigm)
Don't know where the belief comes from originally, but since Hinduism is the oldest extant religion out there today, that's where I'd start looking.

Many mystery religions teach this as well as some Buddhists, Indians and Hindus. Actually even some Christians think this too.
