The main positions in soccer are-
Forward/Striker = The players in this position are usually the ones that score the goals, or who the oppurtunities to shoot on goal are made for.
Midfielder = The players in this position also can score goals, sometimes defend and often make oppurtunities to score for the forwards/strikers.
Defender = The players in these positions defend the goal and sometimes score.
Goalkeeper = The goalkeeper defends the goal from the other team, he rarely scores or has anyhting to do with his team's offense.

The Positions played in soccer are:
Forward/Striker- Scores the goals.
Mid-field/Half-back- Pass the ball, and help the defence get the ball to the Forward/Striker(S).
Wingers-Also midfield/halfbacks but are very wide on the field they cross the ball to the Strikers/Forwards
Defense- Defends the goal and helps the goalie get the ball of their half of the field.
GoalKeeper/Goalie- The only person that can pick up the ball(or during throw-ins) and punt the ball to their team-mates

The general positions are defender, midfielder, foward, and goalkeeper. There are though, many more specific positions, including center-backs, wingers, and strikers (there are even more).
