The trendy wine that goes with anything in Shiraz, unless it comes from France in which case it will be called Petite Syrah. I recomend it. Also a Spanish Ribera del Duero is good with anything.

Well it depends on how the short ribs are cooked. Are they sauteed with other veggies? Do they have a sauce that brings a sweeter or spicy taste? Still I would probably go with a good Californian red wine like a Cab, or Pinot.. Pinot tends to be softer and sweeter than Cab, Napa Valley wine is some of the best too, St. Jean Chateu is decent and not expensive. Gallo Sonoma is another decent one too.

How are you preparing your ribs? Will you have a spicy sweet sauce? Generally the acidity or sweetness of the wine should match the dishes. Of course you also know the general rule of red with red meat and white with poultry or fish. (There are exceptions to this)
A good wine for ribs with a spicy sweet sauce would be 1994 Ramos-Pinto Douro Duas Quintas Reserve, with its dark cherry, spice and meaty notes, or the intense 1994 Niepoort Redoma Red, with its plush texture.
