1. Don't try to learn by yourself or online with some "study buddy". You'll not only get nowhere, but will end up speaking incomphrehensible babble when you try to go any further than the pre-programmed phrases all websites show.

2. Leave romaji behind and never use it again as soon as you can. It's a useless crutch that will get you no where when it comes to the Japanese language. Hiragana and katakana are your *friends*.

3. Kanji is fun. Don't ignore kanji because it appears to be "too hard". By constantly using kanji you are learning, you can remember them better and will allow reading to go a hundred times more smoothly.

4. Practice, practice, practice.

outside of emmersing yourself in the culture, I have found the
following method helped me very much in learning two other
languages. Get a roll of butcher paper from the meat dept.
at your local market and cut it up into long banners. Have
someone say an entire phrase slowly in Japanese i. e....
where can I get the best Sushi in town....and write down
exactly what all the words sound like in English. Write
this phonetic version in big letters with a black marker
and put the banner up next to your bed where you can
look at it day and night. The picture will stay in your
mind and can be recalled easily. Then start on another
complete phrase, etc. Pretty soon you can start connecting
the phrases much as a small child does. The grammar
is built into the sentence and will become clearer as time
goes by. I also record phrases and play them in my car
constantly and soon I know all the words as if they were
popular songs. Try it....it's worked for me. Learning in
blocks of a new language speeds up the process and is
more encouraging than dry translations and confusing
grammar.
