I went to "add a printer" and "troubleshooting" to find tips, and I think my problem has to do with not having the installation cd, what can I do? This printer has worked before.

the two options are :

install the wizard automatically (recommended)

and

install from a list or specific location (advanced)

it says:
the hardware was not installed because the wizard could not find the necessary software.

first do what the other people told you. after downloading the appropriate driver (save it to desktop) go to:

"install from a list or specific location (advanced)" and point it to the driver. the computer should do the rest.
Note: make sure to unzip the file if it comes compressed.

If you do not have the cd to install the printer drivers, then check the printer's website for downloads. Just about all printer companies offer a download site for their products. Chose the correct model of printer, and download the driver from the site. In some cases, you can install from that download, in other cases, you will then have to go and find where you downloaded that driver and do the installation like you are currently doing with the add a printer command.
Good luck

Yes, you can install a printer without the disk it came with. You may be able to use a driver built into windows. (Check under control panel => Printers => Add a Printer). You can also usually get the proper software from the website of the company that makes the printer. You just have to know the exact model of printer you have.

google search for the printer manufacturer who will most likely have a website for driver downloads. Enter in the model of your printer and possibly the operating system for your computer and download the driver to your desktop. Open it from the desk top and then go to the add printer portion of the control panel and install from there.

Depending on your printer you need to go to the the manufacturers website and download the driver.
If you have a lexmark for example you will need to go to there home page and download the printer driver for your specific brand of printer. From there it is usually just a .exe which you click and will install.

Go to the web site of the printer and search the support/driver section for your printer model.

go to its manufacturer's website and search n' download its drivers. make sure u have the correct model. there are many sites which offer driver files if u can't find it at the manufacturer's site(rare though). just google for driver sites.
