Some of it still is. I am advised collection is now very humane. Most HRT however is now synthetic. Patients often feel better however on the 'natural' hormone from mare's urine, which is why it is still in use. Total amount of HRT prescribed has dramatically fallen in recent years and it is now generally only used for the shortest possible time in the. lowest possible dose. Exceptions are premature menopause for whatever reason and one or 2 other rarer problems.

Premarin

PREgnant MARe urINe.

Others may also have animal sources.

The biggest problem, though, is that HRT not only has side effects that mimic the effects of menopause, but that long-term use of HRT is strongly linked to cancer risks. In fact, at least in the US, the fact that the cancer rate has decreased the last 2 years is being hailed as a result of the decreased use of HRT.
