I have a Nikon N75 and want to purchase a slr digital camera (Nikon D50). But I'm trying to figure out if it is cheaper to purchase the body only and lens separately or if possible to use the lens I already have (Quantaray Lens compatible with Nikon N75). Do you know if the N75 lenses are compatable with the D50? Or is there a website where I can check?

The Quantaray will work with both cameras. I too have a Quantaray for my N75 that I am using now on my D50. I also have a Nikkor 70-300mm that works on both the N75 and D50. In general, the Nikon lenses for the Nikon film SLRs will work with the Nikon DSLRs, but not necessarily the other way around. Of course, manual focus lenses will not auto focus on either camera, and the older Nikon "non-CPU" lenses will lose certain functionality (like the different metering options and iTTL flash). Nikon has a line of lenses that are designed for their digital SLRs and will not work correctly with their film SLRs.

Your Quantaray lens will WORK on the D50, but I don't know about all of the features. If you had a Nikon lens, we could just look it up and tell you exactly what features would still work and what features would not work. If it is a CPU lens, which can be identified by the presence of 4 or 5 little brass bumps (CPU contacts) on the lens right on the mounting area, then all of the features should work. If it is non-CPU, then your auto-focus and meter might not work. I don't know where you can look up compatibility because they are two different brands.

Otherwise Tom's explanation is good. Any lens for a film camera will give a suitable image size for the D50 and this is what you are concerned about. If you buy a DX lens for your D50, you may find that it is not suited to use on your N75 at all focal lengths as the edges of the image will be cut off.

Most digital cameras, and all of Nikon's DSLRs, have a smaller sensor than the size of a 35mm film. This means all film SLR lenses can work on DSLRs. There are some new lenses called DX for digital cameras that only cover the sensor and don't work on film SLRs. Their also lighter and smaller because they use less glass. Some of the newer features are best used with the latest lenses though. I'm not sure how well a lens that has the f-stop dial on it will work with the latest DSLRs. You might have to leave it on the highest f-stop.

You can use most of your Nikon lenses on the new digital Nikons. There will be differences, though. A 35mm camera lens will be more telephoto on a digital camera, by a factor of x1.5. You will have more features with the digital lenses. And the digital lenses are more lightweight and compact.

I have had Nikon SLR cameras for the past 20 years. I can fit any of my old lenses on my Nikon D70. They work just fine!
